Sniff Out a New Adventure: 3 Pawsitively Unique Dog-Friendly Trails in Dutchess County

September in the Hudson Valley is pure magic. The air is crisp, the light is golden, and the trails are calling. While Dutchess County is filled with incredible places to hike, sometimes you and your pup are in the mood for something a little different—a trail with a special feature, a bit of mystery, or a one-of-a-kind view.

If you’re ready to go beyond the beaten path, we’ve rounded up three truly unique, dog-friendly hikes that offer an unforgettable experience for both you and your furry co-pilot.

1. The Dover Stone Church, Dover Plains
The Unique Hook: A short, scenic trail that leads to a breathtaking cave-like cavern with a stream running through it, resembling a church’s nave and window.

The Experience: This is a short hike with a huge payoff. The trail itself is a lovely, easy walk that follows the Stone Church Brook (link to the exact location). The real adventure begins as you get closer to the “church,” where you’ll have to navigate a few rocks and cross the shallow stream to enter the cavern. Inside, the massive, cathedral-like rock formation is awe-inspiring. Your pup will love splashing in the creek and sniffing out the cool, damp cave. It’s a fantastic spot for a memorable photo and a great way to cool off on a warm day.

Pawsitive Prep & Pup-Specific Tips:

Parking Pointer: This is a crucial tip for a smooth visit! There is no parking permitted at the actual trailhead, as it’s a private driveway providing public access. But don’t you worry! There are several designated parking lots a short (approx. 5-minute) walk away. Check out the official visitor map below to see exactly where to park your car before you and your pup start your adventure.

Be prepared for wet paws! You will need to walk through the stream to get into the cavern. We recommend bringing a towel for a post-adventure dry-off.

The rocks inside the cavern can be slippery, so watch your footing and keep a good grip on your pup’s leash.

Craving more adventure after the cavern? You’re in luck! The Stone Church is the gateway to a larger network of trails. If you’re up for a longer hike, look for the trailheads for the marked red, yellow, and blue trails that branch off from the main area and lead up the hill for a more traditional woodland trek.

The main cavern is a popular spot, so it’s best to go on a weekday or early in the morning to have it more to yourselves.

2. The Appalachian Trail Boardwalk, Pawling
The Unique Hook: A stunning, 1,600-foot elevated boardwalk that lets you and your pup walk right through the heart of a beautiful wetland.

The Experience: Starting right off Route 22 in Pawling (link to the exact location), this hike begins with an incredible surprise. A long, beautiful wooden boardwalk carries you over the Great Swamp, offering an experience that feels more like a nature documentary than a typical hike. Your pup will be fascinated by the new smells and the sounds of birds and frogs in the marsh below. It’s an incredibly scenic and peaceful way to experience a unique ecosystem up close. The boardwalk itself is flat and easy, making it perfect for dogs of all ages and abilities.

Pawsitive Prep & Pup-Specific Tips:

The boardwalk is just the beginning! It connects to the main Appalachian Trail, which becomes more rugged and hilly if you’re looking for a longer, more challenging hike.

While the boardwalk is generally safe, be aware that some of the planks are worn and have larger gaps. Watch your dog’s step, especially if they have small paws.

This area is a haven for birds, so make sure your pup is leashed to protect the local wildlife.

3. Ninham Mountain Fire Tower, Carmel
The Unique Hook: A moderately challenging loop hike that culminates in a historic 82-foot fire tower offering one of the best 360-degree views in Dutchess County.

The Experience: For the hiking duo that loves a good climb and a big scenic reward, Ninham Mountain is perfect (link to the exact location). The well-marked trails wind through a beautiful forest, offering a great workout for both you and your energetic pup. The forest floor is a wonderland of smells for your dog to explore. The true prize, however, is the summit, where you’ll find the impressive fire tower. The panoramic views from the top are absolutely spectacular, stretching for miles in every direction.

Pawsitive Prep & Pup-Specific Tips:

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: The metal grate stairs of the fire tower are not safe for dog paws and can be very scary for them. Please do not attempt to take your dog up the tower. It’s a perfect job for two humans: one can wait at the bottom with your leashed pup while the other enjoys the view, and then you can switch!

The loop trail can be rocky in sections, so it’s best for sure-footed pups and people.

Bring plenty of water, as the climb will have you both panting!

Before You Go…
Remember to always follow trail etiquette for a safe and happy hike: keep your dog leashed, pack out everything you pack in (including pup waste), and bring plenty of water. A post-hike tick check is always a smart idea, too!
