15 Shelter Dogs Just Found Home in 24 Hours! 🐾

Here in the Hudson Valley, our dog-loving community knows that magic happens when a shelter dog gets a taste of home life.

This past weekend, our friends at Compassionate Animal Rescue Efforts (C.A.R.E.) of Dutchess County in Wappingers Falls proved just how powerful a 24-hour break can be. Through their Saturday Sleepover event, local families opened their doors to give rescue pups a much-needed getaway from the kennel environment—and the results were nothing short of tail-wagging incredible.

How a Blizzard Emergency Sparked a Monthly Movement

The inspiration for this event started with an emergency. When a severe blizzard threatened the Hudson Valley, shelter workers worried they wouldn’t be able to safely reach the facility to care for the animals. Dedicated volunteers stepped up with a last-minute initiative called “Blizzard Buddies,” placing every single shelter dog into temporary homes so the shelter could safely close.

That spontaneous rescue mission resulted in several unexpected adoptions. Building on that success—as well as existing outing programs like Sunday Social (short field trips) and Doggy Day Out (day-long excursions)—C.A.R.E. decided to test a planned 24-hour weekend sleepover.

24 Hours That Changed 15 Lives

For over 40 dogs and puppies, Saturday afternoon brought a car ride, a cozy living room, and a chance to decompress. Host families picked up their temporary houseguests at 4:00 PM on Saturday, equipped with driver’s licenses, a 5 lb bag of donated dog food for the shelter, and plenty of love.

Stepping out of a noisy kennel lets a rescue dog’s true personality shine, helping potential adopters see how well a pup fits into a home setting.

For 15 lucky pups, that overnight stay turned into something permanent. By Sunday evening drop-off, 15 dogs were either officially adopted or placed into a “foster-to-adopt” trial week!

A huge round of ap-paws goes out to volunteer organizer Kristina Rios Daddona, the dedicated shelter staff, every volunteer who coordinated matches, and the local families who opened their hearts and homes for the weekend.

Saturday Sleepover is Going Monthly!

If you missed out on this round, don’t worry! Due to the overwhelming success, C.A.R.E. of Dutchess County is planning the Saturday Sleepover a recurring, once-a-month event. Follow their social media to get notified about next event.

Whether you’re looking to adopt, testing out if a dog fits your lifestyle, or simply want to give a shelter pup a 24-hour break filled with belly rubs and couch naps, your home can make a world of difference.
