Paws & Petals: Dog-Friendly Parks, Streets, and Estates for Spring Blooms in the Hudson Valley
Spring has officially sprung in the Hudson Valley! If your dog is anything like Frank.Endog, they are more than ready to trade the winter snow for some fresh spring grass and exciting new sniffs.
With cherry blossoms, magnolias, and tulips reaching peak bloom by mid-April this year, you don’t have to leave your four-legged best friend at home to enjoy the vibrant colors. While some local structured gardens are strictly human-only, there are plenty of spectacular parks, historic estates, and charming town streets right here in the Hudson Valley that welcome leashed dogs.
Here are our top “pawsitive” picks for a blooming good time:
1. Washington Park (Albany) If you want a true floral spectacle, head to the upper Hudson Valley! Washington Park is famous for its breathtaking spring displays of cherry blossoms, magnolias, and tens of thousands of tulips. The best part? The park is incredibly dog-friendly. You and your pup can stroll along the paved pathways, enjoy views of the lake, and take in the vibrant colors. Just remember that local leash laws are in effect, so keep your furry friend safely tethered!
2. Lyndhurst Mansion Grounds (Tarrytown) For a fairytale afternoon in the lower Hudson Valley, you cannot beat Lyndhurst Mansion. While dogs aren’t allowed inside the Gothic Revival mansion itself, leashed pets are fully welcome to explore the 67 acres of sprawling, landscaped grounds sitting right on the Hudson River. As the estate wakes up for the season, it is a prime, scenic location to spot early-budding magnolias and cherry blossoms with your pup by your side.
3. Clermont State Historic Site (Germantown) This is a tail-wagging paradise in Columbia County! Clermont allows leashed dogs to explore over 500 acres of meticulously landscaped gardens, meadows, and woodlands. It is the perfect place to enjoy blooming magnolias and lilacs while taking in breathtaking views of the Hudson River. They even have five miles of marked nature trails to burn off that extra winter energy before you stop for a picnic.
4. Dassai Blue Sake Brewery (Hyde Park) If you are looking for a truly unique cultural experience this spring, you have to check out the Hudson Valley’s premier sake brewery. While dogs are not permitted inside the state-of-the-art brewing facility, the brewery is set on beautiful grounds in Hyde Park that come alive with cherry blossoms every spring. Even better, they are hosting their 2nd Annual Cherry Blossom Festival this April! It is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy an open-air spring celebration with your pup.
A Quick Spring Safety Reminder: Before you head out to sniff the flowers, remember that some common spring plants—like tulips and daffodils—are toxic to dogs if ingested. Keep your pup on a short leash, stick to the paths, and make sure they are only sniffing, not snacking!
